Exhibition Description

The inspiration for this exhibition comes from memories that reflect me as a person. I'm exploring two different approaches with the common idea of how I see myself as an immigrant to Canada.

Like hints of sunlight caught in the leaves, the embroidered sections add dimension and voice to what could have remained a silent corner of the forest. Each season life gains new colours, we make new memories, but our roots remain the same. The B&W photography echoes the difficulties of being in a new country, and the embroidered work the beginning of a new life.

Flying away birds have the freedom of exploring the world without being noticed. Beading work makes them stand out from the tangled branches. The world is crowded. There are people we see every day but we don't notice them. I blend in, but I feel somehow different. Who sees me for what I am?

Even though we move around the world our image always reflects where we come from, who we are. I combine the slow and meditative process of hand-sewn embroidery with the more immediate medium of digital photography to reflect on nature, mobility and identity.

Venue

Ristorante Julia
This high end downtown Oakville restaurant has been a festival venue since 2002. The dramatic red walls always make the work look striking. Mafalda was invited by the Festival to exhibit in this venue.
